Directors Bio

Rozanne al Jinan of Jinan Performing Arts StudioRozanne Hurst is the artistic director and founder of Jinan Performing Arts Studio. Her lifetime love of dance began at the age of 4 when she enrolled in the well-known Kay Windsor Dance Studio in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Little did she know at that time that she would one day be opening her own school of performing arts.

For fourteen years she studied a diverse set of dance genres such as ballet, pointe, jazz, tap, acrobatics, baton, and Mexican folklorico. At the age of nineteen she discovered Raqs Sharqi, better known as belly dance. Her talents deserved no less than the best, so she sought out dance instructor Libby Prothero, considered to be the Grandmother of belly dance in New Mexico. Libby, once a member of the June Taylor Dancers, was a professional dancer with a professional performance attitude.

Rozanne studied belly dance, hula and Tahitian style dance under Libby and performed with Libby’s Troupe, Zamaroot. Standing out amongst the group as a top performer, Rozanne was discovered by a talent scout while dancing at a Lebanese hafla (party), and embarked on a professional dance career in California as a soloist.

She returned home a few years later, and yearning to share her love of dance and rhythm, she began teaching belly dance classes here in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  For the past 10 years, she has taught at the Albuquerque TKD studio in Paradise Hills and together with her troupe, Zahara al Jinan, has won numerous awards, and is a frequently featured writer for magazines such as The Chronicles:A Belly Dancer’s Oasis.

In addition, she has produced and choreographed her own shows and a teaching DVD. In sharing her passion and artistry with the Albuquerque community, she was inspired to create a performance space where all dancers, young and young at heart, would be welcomed and nurtured.  It has been her dream that everyone should be able to experience the joy and satisfaction that comes with the discipline of dance.  Working side by side with her husband Steve, that dream has now become a reality. Jinan Performing Arts Studio is a culmination of many years of collective training by a number of very talented dance and fitness instructors.
